F&T worked with Lavallee Brensinger Architects to provide a new 6,600-square-foot unit that will treat critically ill newborns and their mothers at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The new unit includes fully integrated couplet rooms designed and constructed to coordinate acute care for both infant and mother, among the first such models in the Commonwealth.
We also provided MEP/FP engineering for the selective upgrade renovations to the existing labor & delivery unit, including creating two additional labor & delivery rooms, and stress-test / triage suites.
The project’s challenges included the phased updates within the existing, fully operational unit, and coordination of the unique couplet room requirements amid updated DPH requirements. These challenges are met by a very high level of communication and coordination amongst the project team members; and design and construction process overlapping to increase speed to, and through, construction.
