Fitzemeyer & Tocci provided full MEP/FP engineering services for the renovation of historic Kaven Hall at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, originally constructed in 1954. Prior to the renovation, the building relied on window-mounted air conditioners and operable windows to meet cooling and ventilation needs.
As part of the HVAC upgrades, two new air handling units (AHUs) were installed in the attic space, utilizing chilled water supplied from an adjacent building. This improvement significantly enhanced occupant comfort, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality throughout the facility.
Lecture halls were modernized to support evolving pedagogical needs, including reconfiguration to allow increased spacing between students and the integration of advanced audiovisual systems. These upgrades enabled flexible learning and interactive engagement from any location within the space.
The project successfully blended historic preservation with modern engineering solutions and was recognized with a Bronze Engineering Excellence Award from ACEC/MA for its innovation and execution.
